Lately, there has been an increase in attempts on the Internet to gain access to this kind of information by way of unsolicited emails or “pop-up” ads pretending to be legitimate businesses. These emails or “pop-ups” may even contain logos that look like the real company’s logo, but are an elaborate copy. Usually these emails or “pop-up” ads direct you to go to a “look-alike” web site where you are asked to verify, update or validate information the legitimate web site already has in its possession. There is often an “urgent” message to do this as well.

The National Grand Bank will never ask you for any private information (social security number, account numbers, PINS, passwords, name, address, etc.) through unsolicited email, mail or phone calls.

Never respond to requests for passwords, account numbers or PINs via email.

Always look for the “padlock” icon on your web browser’s status bar (or “https://” in the beginning of the address in the browser bar) before submitting any personal or financial information to any web site. It indicates a secure method of transmission.

Never share your PINS, IDs or passwords with anyone and change them frequently, using both letters and numbers for greater security.

Always log off the secure website you are using and close your web browser before leaving your computer.

Update your operating system, anti-virus software and firewall regularly.

Review your account statements as soon as you receive them for inaccuracies or fraudulent activity.

Report any suspicious activity to the Federal Trade Commission at www.ftc.gov. If you think you’ve been “phished”, also visit the FTC’s Identity Theft web site at www.ftc.gov/idtheft to learn how to minimize your risk of damage.
